Transmission Leak - I'm not making this up
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:23:33 pm »
I knew that the rear seal in my '86 Truck with 700R4 was leaking a little bit but when I saw a puddle underneath the truck last weekend, I bit the bullet and replaced the rear seal. Today I looked and  I have another puddle under the truck.  I crawled under and looked and it's obvious the seal is doing its job because the area beneath and around it is dry.  It appears that the fluid is leaking out of the the darn slip yoke universal joint.  Is that possible?  What in heck am I going to need to fix that?

thanks
Rock

Sure it is ATF? Just asking because for what ever reason, the last tube of grease I got, Mobil 1 synthetic, it drips. It leaks out of the gun and out of the areas i greased. Its like the chemical components of the grease are separating. Dunno when the last time you greased your U joints.

It's ATF.  A u-joint won't hold this much grease.  :)

Ah Ha!  Here is the answer.  I'm thinking JB weld over the weep hole rather than removal of the tailshaft housing, however.

A small sheet metal screw with loctite thread sealant did the trick.

I didn't know that weep hole existed, but do you really want to plug it?  The article says its there to relieve pressure from the yoke sliding in and out.  What will blow when there is no where for that pressure to go?

As a temporary fix a blob of RTV will work but you should replace the inner seal
