Why do you want to shim the front axle? Pinion shims are for setting the pinion depth. How much lift do you have?

also they can be used to set pinion angle for the front axle so the steering is all lined up again especially after you do a 4 or 6 in lift as in my case. the truck steers horribly so i looked at the upper ball joint and it is set back towards the rear of the truck

You've got to be more specific if you want good advice. If you are doing a 4-6" suspension lift you won't need to do anything with the front axle. Drop your crossmember one inch and you'll be fine.

I know what you mean 86. I have a Superlift 6 inch kit in my 1983 that has angled shims on the front leaf pack to ease driveline angles. I removed them from the packs and added uniform spring pads.

Angle shims are a band aid fix that will cause more harm than good when lifting the frontend. They ease the front U joint angles, but throw the alignment off. The axle is designed so that the knuckles are leaning toward the rear of the truck for a reason. Its the caster in the alignment. It returns the steering wheel to center and fights wander. If you loose that angle, the truck will handle poorly and will be subject to bump steer or death wobble.
