rearview mirror
« on: July 21, 2010, 05:07:01 pm »
I have tried 2 times now to glue my rear view mirror to the window. I am using the mirror glue sold at all parts stores, I do just like the directions say and even let it setup overnight they say it only needs 15 min, but when I put the mirror on the button and try to adjust the button just keeps poping off the glass. Anyone else have this problem, what else can I try to use

Did you clean off the glass good?  I haven't ever had a problem with them.  You only need a dot of glue on it.

scrape the area with a razor blade and clean it. Wire wheel the button, apply the activator and the glue.

Clean both surfaces with alcohol and make sure you dont touch that surface after. Ive never had a problem with the kit. Temperature might affect the curing.

I scraped and cleaned both surfaces with the cleaner they had in the kit, I live in the desert and temp out now is about 118 the kit says to do it around 75 but it wont be that cold for 3 or 4 more months and in a garage it is even hotter, thats why I gave it almost 24 hours to cure. Has anyone tried any thing else to glue it to the window

I don't think the problem is the cure. Heat should speed that up. I think the alcohol in the cleaner is vaporizing before it can do any good. Try another kit, this time at night.

Man I hated foolin with that non sense... I went down to a professional glass place and asked them how much.. she said hold on and they went out there and dabed it with some gel and wham. Never done business with them, just being nice and it was free. Might give it a try.

Well we had a rain storm tonight and temps droped down to around 80, I tried it again cleaned glass and took a wire wheel to the button, used the cleaner/ prep and then glued it down, gave it about an hour then put the mirror back on. It finally stuck, I was able to adjust it and it stayed. Wait for the heat tomorrow and hope it holds, thanks everyone, like I said I have used the kit before and it worked great but on this truck the first two kits I used fell right off.

I have the opposite problem, I can't get mine to come off. The previous owner replaced the mirror and put the button on crooked and too low. Is there a danger of breaking the glass if I twist it off slowly with a wrench?

I think acetone will loosen it.

My glassman heats them up with a butane torch.  No idea on the technique and I personally wouldn't try it, just sayin...

I bought two kits this summer and had the same problem. Except as soon as I'd hang my mirror, it would fall off just as soon as I let go! Nothing you can buy thses days is as good as it used to be. I've done 4 or 5 in my life and never had a problem. The alcohol or whatever the cleaner is used to come in a little stick/tube  like deal you'd rub on the glass. Now it is like a little prep wipe. I don't know. I finally took a 3" convex mirror for the outside mirror and stuck it to a little metal bracket and put that on the ceiling with a couple of small magnets. I still have my big dumbos on the doors, so all I really need to see is if someone is directly behind which the small mirror does just fine. Plus I have a better field of view without rearview mirror blocking it. Kind of weird I know but no one ever noticed.
