Bed bolt blues
« on: July 25, 2010, 06:01:53 PM »
Well a few months ago I wanted to square up my bed and for that I need to loosen up the bolts on the front header panel of the bed. Well to do that I needed to remove the 8 simple bolts holding the bed to the frame. Simple eh... wound up haveing to cut some of the bolt heads off becuase they rounded the hole out. So after a few months after not having but about 3-4 bolts holding my bed down, I finally found my solution.

under shot showing the length

and the nut and tab that I will be replacing the stamped bracket thing that holds the nut which probally would break over time.

I'm not following you? Are you saying the carriage bolts were spinning in the bed floor? (common problem) So your solution is to replace them with new bolts and nuts with a welded tang  ???

Usually I just weld a nut to the top of the carriage bolt and then zip em off. You can easily replace them with new bed bolts and use a little anti-sieze.

Yup. just another way of fastening the bed to the frame. yeah, a few of the holes were rounded so i just opened up the other holes so the Ford bolts would pass through. Worked great, It will look better once i bed line it and paint the bolts. The Ford SportTrack has longer bolts (the back 2) and they are black in color, but they are hard to find in the bone yard. New they are 28 bucks. The front ones are around 15 bucks, but I didnt take one out and test fit it.
