New From Ohio

Hey Everyone! im Sean, 17 From ohio. about 15 mins north of Dayton. 45 mins West of Columbus. im Definately New to this forum, and somewhat new to dealing with older trucks. About a year ago i purchased my first.A 79 K10, short bed. 9in. Lift 38.5 in. tires Since buying the truck ive realized alot done wrong. Also the trans has gone bad so im somewhat stuck at the moment. im trying my hardest to fix it up, atleast to the best of my knowledge. I Deffinately would like any possible help. i do have two very helpful grandfathers but their knowledge is still limited. Anyways Thanks everyone

It's a Turbo 350. it had been through a lot from the previous owner apparently, plus what i was doing did not help. it is in a shop now but they want $1050 to rebuild! which i don't have. Does that seem like a fair price? i have heard that at most they should only need around $300. Also,, i am Pretty sure that the gearing in the axles is Not what it should be with the size tires i have. My problem with that is i honestly, don't really know what to do. i know it has to do with the differentials, but that is pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the Gearing. ANYYY help would be greatly appreciated

39s are pretty big for stock axles, im guessing a 10 and 12 bolt? what gear ratios are you running?

Yeaa, im Pretty sure that's the axles. i tried finding some sort of ID on them but couldnt find anythingg, im going to take some pictures so that should Help and ill be able to show you, as for Gearing, at the moment, lets say Stock gearing?, from what Ive seen, the previous owner liked to take the cheap way out so i would not be suprised At all.
Im Obviously a Newbie, haha im tryin to work with ya tho, i know its hard

Well, stock gearing can be a number of gear ratios. If you need to change your diff fluids, make sure you count the teeth on the ring gear and pinion and then divide and you will have your ratio. With 39s I would say you need at least 4.56s depending on the transmission and transfer case your running.

$1050 is not outrageous for a rebuild, torque converter, and the labor to R&R the tranny. Are they going to warrentee it with those big tires on it?
As far as gearing, Beastie is right, You need something with around 4.56's gears.
I had a parts truck 3.08 gears and 38.5" swampers on it, what a dog.
The way I see it you have 2 options, add smaller tires or upgrade your axles.
What are your plans for the truck? Do you plan to 4 wheel it hard?

Welp i heard from the shop today, i figured out this actually isnt a bad price. They did lower to $1007 so im a Little happier. Apparently they have to replace, even the "Hard parts" so its a deffinately a TOTAL rebuild now. I dont think they will warranty, Only because I pulled the transmission, and plan on reinstalling it. I deffinately wouldn't mind them doing it, but i dont have the money. Ill deffinately do what you said though. I think this is Mainly going to be onroad, with the occasional Offroad excursion. Im not going to be entering it in any mudbogs anytime soon, I just want it to hold up.    and i am pretty Positive ive got the 10 & 12 bolt axles
