Red Metallic vs Grey Metallic
« on: August 14, 2010, 05:07:40 pm »
I am going to be painting my 87 Lifted Chevy fleetside soon. I am going to get a commercial grade PPG paint color and stuck between a metallic red or a "slate" (dark) grey metallic color. I think both look nice but grey would be cheaper and I was wondering how grey metallic nearly black would show with dirt and scratches. I would think any metallic color wouldn't be too bad, just wondering if anyone has seen this color or used a color like it and how it shows dirt and knicks, etc.

Also I am going to use a lacquer primer, my father painted his truck and numerous other projects with a lacquer primer with a single stage urethane base and turned out nice. I was told its easier to use then 2k primers. Any opinions on this? I could also do a lacquer base and clear but that would require numerous coats of clear and sanding and this truck will see mud and trails, so didn't want to go that far into paint.

Any opinions appreciated.

2nd on the grey.  Hides dirt better than red.

The darker the color the more the scratches show up. Grey will show daily dust and dirt less though. As far as lacquer primer, run the other way. It shrinks and will show any sand scratches from your body work, and possibly from sanding the old finish. Urethane primers are 500 time better.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I have a gray on my truck (b.c.c.t.)

red would hide scratches better; but a gray would probably be easier to touch up when it does get scratched.
So far I am the only one that has noticed any scratches on my truck-they are not really too noticable from a little distance.

Thanks for the opinions.

That grey looks nice, very clean looking truck. I am going to a PPG Dealer for paint, but out of curiosity what color/brand is they grey?

depends on what shade of red you pick, I think a deep red looks good on almost anything.

Yeah I like red, I just wanted to change the color from it allready being red. I think I actually am going to go with a silver. I found this picture and its pretty similar to my truck and I think its nice looking.
