steering and stability...
« on: September 03, 2010, 01:00:50 pm »
'87 silver 4x4 350 tbi 10 bolt sfa all around. This isn't a new issue for me i just got to the point where i want to fix it so i'm looking for some things that you guys may have tried and that worked. I'm looking to improve the steering response and stability. It seems to be really spungy and slow to respond...and yes i know it's a truck but you can always improve over the factory parts. I really don't mind trying anything from polly bushings to a different gear box there has to be something better out there.
Thanks..

well there is a few things that could make this happen. for me it was my steering box bolt were lose. then i had a crack in my frame then it went to my ball joints were bad in my drag link. so i ended up doing a cross over steering on it and that fixed all my problems.

i would check to see were its flexing at (slop in tie rods, pitman arm, idler arm and drag links)  could be multiple things check everything out have someone turn/rock the steering wheel with the engine off and see what moves first

You're talking about making modifications but it sounds like you have issues and there's no need to modify the system. Do a dry park check of the entire front end and check your ball joints. Replace your steering stabilizer if it's old too.

I know this truck has issues and i'm going to fix them with upgrades and i guess that is what i'm looking for. The truck hasn't been beat on much at all..yet! so i'm sure that it's just the '87 rubber bushings and a small alignment to fix but while replacing things i'm just looking for upgrades. Thanks for all the info of what to check...been there and now it's time to fix and there's always an improvement from stock...

You don’t have to upgrade parts from the parts store will do just fine. I put polly bushings in my truck didn’t notice that much better response none actually. They are made more for cars to stiffen up the suspension but on our tucks I don’t see a whole lot to upgrade but you can improve by putting on new parts
