1987 chevy 1500 with cummins blinker and lights dont work right
« on: September 14, 2010, 09:10:18 pm »
Ok I did a complete body off resto-mod "sort of" on my 87 chevy 4x4 truck. I have all the wires hooked up and when I hit the brakes the gauge lights come on and clearence lights light up and when I let off they go off. When I hit the left side blinkers all the outside lights blink with it. When I hit the right side just the right side works like normal. I cant figure out what it is and it has me stuck and ready to carry to a guys shop that fixed some wiring foes on a past truck."which I hate having other people work on my baby". any help will be appreciated and yea it has a 93' cummins 6bt/chevy nv4500

If you checked the wiring diagram and everything is right then something is crossed wired or hooked up wrong.  sometimes it's best to walk away for a day or two and then tackle the job again.  My other suggestion would be to get a second pair of eyes on it.  Sometimes you get so focused on 1 thing that you overlook something, or it's right in front of you and you can't see it.  Happens to me at work sometimes......Tom

Sounds like a ground problem. Did you redo the wiring in the cab or anywhere?

Have you mixed and matched harnesses from different years? Is the steering column or from a different year?
Should be several grounds on the e brake bracket, one behind the left tail light, one from the block to the cab, one from the negative term to the core support above the right head light, and to the frame, one from the nose harness to the core support above the left head light. I'm sure i am forgetting a couple.

The only thing that i have done is put a new front clip and put a diesel gauge cluster in it. I havent messed with any of the wires inside. Today i tried messin with it and still no worky only the right signal works correctly. But still the same when hitting the brakes

Put the gas gage cluster back in and see if it solves the problem?

Check your grounds up front since you did take it apart. Did you change years with the front clip

Do you have something else tied in to your brake pedal switch that shouldn't be? If the trouble starts when you hit the brakes I would chase that circuit and see what you find.
