Need Frame VIN
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:12:11 pm »
I need to get the VIN off my frame but i cant find it.  Ive found a few different numbers on the frame but there not VIN numbers.  One that i found on the top of the frame rail, passenger side is C6S215739.  I found this under the cab and also close to the motor mount.  What number is this?  Can this number tell me anything?  My frame has several coats of paint on it and im having a hard time finding the VIN.  I know it should be on top of the rail under the cab somewhere right?  My frame is a 4x4 shortbed frame.  Anybody have any ideas?  I really need to get the title for this frame.  Thanks.

I dont know exactly what year it is.  I wanna say its a late 70's.  Maybe 76 or 78.  This frame has been passed around between a few guys so thats why i dont know the exact year.

On my 74, step side 4x4, I found it next to the gear box for the steering.  Granted I had to chip, and sand the area down just to get to it, but I found it.  On mine it was on the outside just in front of box.  I do not know what all those numbers you listed were, mabey someone will link up a web site for chasing down frame vin #'s.  Good luck....Tom

I dont remember seeing it where the gearbox is.  I have a frame patch now.  But i dont think i saw it before i put the patch on.  Isnt there a few VINs that they put on these frames?  I mean like different locations with the VIN.

Look on the pass side fram rail where the gas tank is on the top of the frame and where the tank bolts on.

C6S215739......You found it.

Even though there are more characters to the complete VIN, this is all of the VIN number that you will find stamped in the rail it'self.

From this, I can tell you that your frame was originally a Chevy truck. GMC will start with a T.

It is a 1976 model year frame, and the truck was built in the StLouis assembly plant.

215739 is the build sequence number.

The vin on the frame has nothing to do with a title the only vin that counts is on the dash/door frame

No DOT told me that they want the frame VIN.  They dont need the cab VIN.  And the partial VIN i found wont work for them.

Lol did you tell them you changed cabs or anything in Maryland and Delaware they only need the vin in the cab since most time people can't find vin on the frame and its all rusted over I would give them the vin from the cab if they want the frame vin go to another station that doesn't know about the whole cab switching. Its more like not telling the whole truth and don't say anything about the frame. If and when you get pulled over no cop will bother looking at the frame for the vin or look at what engine is in it to match it up

They want an actual VIN number that is stamped on the framerail.  You won't be able to title it with what you have.
If you have searched everywhere, it probably doesn't have it, or it is rusted beyond reading.

They told me all this crap that someone will have to come and inspect it, and if they cant find a VIN on the frame then they will issue me one.  And i believe that has to be court ordered.  The main reason i was trying to go that route is cause i havent got the title to the cab.

I still don't see what the frame tittle has to do with it they should come out and inspect the cab make sure its original vin then make sure its not altered and make a new title up for you then you could try to get the title from the PO. See I think you told to much info. We could kind of help some of us have had the same problem or others that could of given you some tips
