was driving along and my truck just stopped driving
« on: September 28, 2010, 10:08:34 pm »
hey guys Ive got a dilemma my 79 k10 was driving just fine and i was approaching a red light so i started to slow down. as soon as i hit the gas it just revved up and didn't respond at all i then shifted down and again the same. I coasted to the side of the road and came to a complete stop and shifted into park and it made the most God awful whine/grind Ive heard in a while. my truck has a th350 tranny and an NP203 tranfercase and a 383 w 11:1 compression pushing the General FLEE. Now the transfercase has one shifter and it seems to be stuck (haven't been able to move it since i got the truck) but it has always drove and good at that. Ive done all the work to it myself and plan to keep it that way I'm just stumped and on limited funds so i need to know what i should rebuild the tranny or the transfercase. It doesn't do anything when i shift it into any gear cant even hear any sounds EXCEPT when i shift it back into park and then it grinds/whines like a banshee. any suggestions, or help would be greatly appreciated.

your linkage may have slipped.  Get up under it and check the shift linkage...try to manually flip it to another gear and run it.

If no luck, drop the pan off the th350 and look for metallic shavings.

couldn’t the transfercase shifter pop out?

Prob. a longshot but have you tried to start the truck since then?  I've sheared the flexplate before and the engine keeps running with some grinding noise but goes nowhere.  Once you shut it off the engine obviously won't start again.
