AC Throttle Soleniod
« on: October 09, 2010, 08:10:24 am »
I just bought an Edelbrock #8059 Solenoid for my truck.   I don't think my truck came with one on the Q-Jet but I want one for the Edelbrock.   Can't stand the RPM change at idle anymore.   Should be here Monday.

I'm going to just splice it into the wire to the compressor clutch.   Anybody see any problems with this?  If I have to I'll put a relay on it, I just hate adding all that extra wiring for one solenoid.   What do yall think?

Well, I have some wiring problems to sort out now... :)  i have quite a voltage drop to the compressor.  While the rest of the truck shows 14.2 volts, the wire to the compressor only shows 11.8v or so...   now i have to find out the problem.  it's still 11.8v to the wire even when the compressor is unhooked and not drawing current.  the wire at the pressure switch on the AC drier shows full voltage.

the solenoid works perfect when I run full voltage to it from the battery terminal with a jumper.  right now with the low voltage to it, the solenoid doesn't have enough power to actually move the throttle, so its doesn't work right now.  Its a short route from the drier to the compressor though, so i have to clean some connections and well see how it goes.

How are you measuring the voltage? If you unhook the connection at the compressor is it still only 11.8Volts?

Yeah it was 11.8  with the compressor unhooked or hooked up.  the wire would run the solenoid as long as the compressor wasn't hooked up.

It ended up being two things...   the connection at the firewall that goes directly to the compressor had a real nasty connection, and there was break in the wire also.  i split the insulation off after I got it out and there was a broken place with only 3 or 4 strands connecting it.

Patched and cleaned it up and now it's working. ;D

I had an old OE connector with a bit of wire off of a horn for one of these trucks and used that on the solenoid, so it looks like a stock connection.

Now my idles nice and even.  the RPMS dip the littlest bit when the comp kicks in but in less than a second its maintaining the correct idle speed.   and you can't tell when the comp goes off unless you can hear it click.

Thanks Vile
