factory stall converter - 87 R30
« on: October 13, 2010, 01:46:03 pm »
one more dummy question.

Im assuming that the R30 i picked up has some sort of a factory higher stall torque converter in it to get that little bitty 350 to move the giant truck around.

anyone know for sure if thats the case, and what the rpm might be? hate to 1. order one smaller than what i have already or 2. order one and not need one at all.

we're trying to keep this thing as low buck as possible just to show how cheap a 5.3 can be swapped into one of our favorite trucks, but if i cant find a z06 cam, well, there are other options  ;D

Why do you need to order another torque converter? Is something wrong with yours?

higher stall vile, if i order one i can nab an lsx one and eliminate the need for the spacer on the flywheel.  were gonna keep the th400 behind the 5.3 for now.

but if i already have a higher factory stall converter, no reason to replace it, and we stock those spacers so its not a huge deal either way.

How aggressive are you getting with the 5.3L?

+ associated springs and push rods.

basically wondering if the factory converter is gonna mesh well with this, its gotta have some sort of a higher stall to it to get the tbi 350 thats in it now to move the pig... youd figure anyway.

If your plans are to eventually replace the Th400 I would say don't bother but if you are going to upgrade soon then buy a new converter. If you're keeping the 400 then definitely go with a higher stall
