Sputtering/Bogging down during hard acceleration
« on: October 15, 2010, 10:30:46 pm »
New to the site.  Just bought a 74 Chevy K10.  Has 350 with Edelbrock Carb.  (very new to carburators)

I seem to have a smooth idle and the truck acccelerates okay if done slowly.  However, if I accelerate quickly the truck starts to sputter and bog down. (almost feeling like its getting too much fuel).  As soon as I let off the pedal it smooths out.  From what I have read it sounds like I am running too rich.

Does this sound right to anyone?  Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

All input is appreciated!!!

What hole is the linkage on the acelerator pump? Looking at the motor with you standing in front of the truck its on the top right of the carb there should be three holes I can't remember which one helps but I think if you move it to the top hole it will help you. If not you got one more hole you can move the linkage too and try again.

Thanks for your response. I tried it on both other holes. It helped the acceleration but didn't help the sputtering. I notice it only happens in third gear when I accelerate hard. I have a three speed automatic tranny.

Is your plugs wires and timing good? It could still be the carb but those may do it to. have you adjusted the carb with a vacume gauge?

Plugs and wires are next on my list. Haven't had the truck long. Since it's only in third gear between 2500/3000 rpm could it be the high idle on the carb?

Fuel filter & tune-up, and set timing. Since you just got the truck, check for vacuum leaks and get the simple stuff taken care of and then see if the symptoms persist.

a tune up is a must. after you turn it up that should help with most of it if not you know you have other problems

Do you have the stock carb or an aftermarket carb ?

Sounds like a lack of fuel not too much fuel. check for kinked fuel lines/hoses

I agree with Vile definitely lack of fuel. Weak pump? Vacumn leak?
