horn install
« on: November 16, 2010, 10:24:28 pm »
Need to quickly put a horn under the hood to pass inspection. Does anyone know if the horn button needs to legally be on the steering wheel or if I can use an aftermarket button on a different spot?

I have a new steering wheel with a horn option(came with extra wiring and adapter plates etc). Can't tell if any of that is hooked up properly because I have no horn under the hood.

Once I buy one, where should I put it? The wiring seems to be gone.

I have no left over wires in the areas the factory horns were. I'm. Of sure what wires,if any, from inside the cab come through the firewall.

I've heard of people passing with a foot-button on the floor for the horn.  I think all they want is to hear a horn sound  when they ask for it.

The horns supposed to be behind the grille, but anywhere under the hood will work good too.  some cars came and come with the horns under the hood somewhere, I've even seen them on the firewall before.

Alright, figured it out. New horn installed... no dice. Assuming its the fuse or relay... where are these located? On my fuse box it looks like it used to be labeled, but all the white writing has rubbed off.

I'm not following you. You said figured it out, then you said replaced?

Start over,

Take a test light connected to ground. Probe the connector that goes to the horn and depress the switch. Does it light up?

If not go to the connector I referenced to in the other thread and follow those steps.

Got it sorted out. It was a combination of a bad horn, relay, and a cut wire.

Figured out the wiring, still nothing...so I replaced the horn, still nothing, so I replaced the fuse, nothing, went back over the wiring and found a rat chomp through a section...fixed that and finally my horns beepin'.
