I'm back. With a new ride as well.
« on: November 20, 2010, 11:32:40 pm »
I haven't been on here since I ditched my 74 chevy c10 project and bought a much nicer truck.  I'll be getting my new 1987 Chevy V10 here early next week.  Beside a damaged drivers door and a dent on the cab, this truck is clean.  No rust anywhere.  Literally.  I'm not too big in the off road scene though.  I just needed a good winter vehicle.  So I have some questions.  Did this truck come stock with a 12 bolt rear end and what transfer case should it have?  It doesn't have the TBI anymore and it has a stock 700r4.  Any issues with these later trannys?  I paid $2800 for it.  I hope I got a good deal.

87 came with 10 bolt from the factory.
The later 700r4's are fine.
If the PO swapped out the TBI, you may have issues with inspection (if you have them).

No pics yet.  Don't have a camera.  PO didn't swap it, the guy before him did.  Quadrajet was stuck on top.  I'll replace it with a holley 670.  I have inspection where I live but the truck will be registered in a non e check county.  No cats either.  Needs some work but nothing too hard.  I wish I knew what T case it has.  I think a 208 but I don't know.  Definitely a 12 bolt though and not a dana 60

T case should be a NP 208. A Dana 60 would be a full floating rear end, and 8 lugs.

I just think it's weird it has a 12 bolt.  Might even have a 205 T case.  Not sure though.  I'll have pics in a few days.  Even though it's 4wd, it makes me miss my 74. This truck is so dang clean though.

12 bolts were in these trucks for a few years.  Stronger than a 10 bolt....
If the PO didn't change transfer cases it should be an NP 208

700r4 are 27 spline the only 205 that was 27 splines was pre 79 which wont bolt to a 700. Maybe there is an adapter for that but its not stock the only case that bolts to a 700 stock that I know of is a 208. The 12 bolt should be in older trucks pre 85 while the 10 bolt came in the front and rear of trucks of you age

The 10 bolt was fully implemented into the half tons in 1982 so no the 12 bolt is not stock.

The 208 has a full aluminum case and the 205 is cast iron so that should be an easy spotter right there.

It was tough to tell.  It was dirty.  I'm not into the 4x4 scene, I don't know all these things.  I wonder what year that tranny is now.  Hmmm.  I'll  get you guys pics asap.  I'm so excited :).

This is not true.  12bolt trucks had a MUCH smaller pinion than the 12bolt cars and it is smaller than 10bolts.

The T-case should have a tag on it in plain view that says what it is.

Thanks.  I'll be sticking on some 33's as well as lift springs rather than the rear blocks and a crossover steering setup when I find one.  I got a few mechanical issues to deal with first.
