Fender Emblems

Is there any way to remove these without taking apart the entire front end?  I am finishing stripping the outside for paint.  One is half broken and the other had the finish come off, so I am not entirely against breaking them off.  Just don't want to have to pay for new ones, they are not cheap.

You should be able to get to them from the engine compartment.I know there speed nuts on the end,just going to have to take your time and remove them.I had bought a pair of front fenders and welded the holes shut but i think you can get to them without having to have hands like a contortionist..

No love on reaching in to get them out.  I cannot even get close to them.

What year is it?  I know on the 73-80 trucks to save the emblem, you have to take the fender off, as they're held on with nuts on 2 studs from the inside.  Otherwise you just have to break them, which will leave a reverse dent around the holes. 

I don't know about 81-87, I never tried to remove them from one.

From the factory all were held on with speed nuts on the inside of the fender.
For the 80's I believe you had to remove the Inner fender to get them off.

I have taken them off my using a coping saw blade to cut the plastic stud off.  I pulled it out enough to get the blade in there and used a piece of stainless shim to protect the fender.  It don't take much to cut the studs.  When I put them back on I used 3m 2 side tape on the back.  It holds them on there really good.  I never had one come back off.  Also I think I had to put 2 layers of tape on in spots to fill in where the letter is recessed  on  the back.

I had a 69 Longhorn Camper Special and the emblems just pushed in some plastic gormets that were kind of like the ones used to put screws in drywall. I was wondering if there was anything like that available so if you did go to all of the trouble to take them off without destroying them, you could easily reinstall them after you had you rig painted.

This is the same idea I was brewing up.  I think it is the winner.

This is what held them on from the factory. They are called thread cutting nuts



If you want to put them back on without using those use these



They're called barrel nuts

Correct.  find the clips that fit onto the emblem, and drill the fender for that size.  It has to be a bit tight though or it will rattle.

Reviving a dead thread... I looked for the tube nuts Vile showed and I can't find any around here. I looked at one of the largest auto paint suppliers for our area and at Granger. Anyone know where you can order these?

I got some from the dealership, they gave them to me as I only needed 3.  I buy alot of stuff there though.
