Fix NP208 leak w/o dropping it?
« on: December 22, 2010, 03:34:13 pm »
Hoping to pick someone's brain here. I have small leak on my t-case, narrowed it down to where the two halves mate up. From what I've gathered there's just RTV on the surfaces. Is it possible to pull off the rear cover and replace the sealant with out dropping the whole thing?

It may be possible, but I would pull it and put it front down on a bench to reseal it.

I just re-sealed  and inspected the 208 on my burb. While I have no experience actually servicing one while installed, I can almost assuredly say that it will be a PIA to split the case and re-assemble while it's in the truck. It was a bit tricky to get the shafts to seat while making sure the selector fork spring was going in at the same time while I had mine out and upright on the bench. I could see lots of cussing going on if had I attempted that while it was installed.

I say pull it out and do it on the bench.
There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

Removal and installation will take less time than the actual splitting it,inspecting it, cleaning the surfaces, and putting it back together. I would pull it for sure.
