What 73-87(91) got you hooked to these trucks??
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:18:09 am »
I have had a bunch over the years and have several pictures to share but my 1982 Scottsdale C-10 was my first favorite that really made me fall for these trucks.  I was going through photos and I had my son scan some. Before that in Texas was my 1981 3+3 C-20.  Next was my beaters a 81 GMC and 79.  I thought I would throw in the only brand new vehicle I have ever bought, my 1992 C1500 Silverado.

Next is the crew cab.  It was stolen and recovered minus the custom rims and front seat.  Also stolen was the fuel selector valve but it also had a LP conversion which I got rid of right away.

My beaters both were quite rusty but ran well.  One was a 81 3/4 T GMC and the other a 79 1/2T.

Well to be honest I loved the 68-72 models. My father had a 69 while I was growing up. What got me attracted to the box was my first one, an 84 stepside. I like how the step sides break up the long straight sides and make the truck look much older then it is.

When I was a kid I saw a brand new 76 chevy shortbox 4X4 roll into my dad's shop straight from the dealership. I was hooked from that day on.

I was 12 when this body style came out. This is what we rode in all through my high school years and I always have liked that style. Now that I'm older, I still love the body style ( I'm a round headlight guy) and I really enjoy the dependability, the simplicity and the relative ease with which you can work on them. Plus the parts are fairly cheap and plentiful. Also, like some of the guys here have attested to, you can leave one sitting for years and with a hot battery and a little gas you can get it running easily. One of the unique things about these trucks as anyone whose been on this board for any time will see, is that you can do all sorts of things to these trucks to make them fit any need you have or make them look any way you want them to. The best, most versatile trucks ever built in my opinion.
Sorry so long. Next time I will say what I really think. ;)

Back in the day when I was a wee little tyke my Dad had a gold 73 1/2 ton long bed with a 350, headers and Thrush glass packs hanging underneath, I remember it sounded AWESOME!!!!! It was a 3 on the tree and I thought shifting a truck like that was the coolest thing. He had ET aluminum slots and white letter tires, and a shiny aluminum cap on the bed. Oh it was SWEEEEET and got me hooked on these trucks for life!

Back in the mid-late 80's I was working for a Ford dealer in a small town in Oregon. I was a lot attendant and we got 2 80's GMC/Chevy trucks in on trade. They were still fairly new at the time and we used them around the lot to do landscaping. We hauled lots of bark dust. I liked the yellow one, it was a K10 long bed. Something about that truck just stuck with me and over 20 years later I still have fond memories of that yellow truck.
I was pissed when GM brought out the 88+ truck, still have not forgiven them and refuse to drive one.
(I worked for a Chevy dealer as a Mechanic in the 90's and still hated them)

I grew up with a 73 C10 and a 76 K5, and they were cool, but it was the 82 K10 that stole my heart.

Someday that 73 and 76 will both run again...

I've had a few over the years myself. 1st one was a '73 with a 454 in it. Gobs of torque! Got rid of it, and had a few others for short periods of time. Then acquired an '86 burb and was hooked. Had to get rid of it eventually, and regretted it ever since. Now I am fresh off of a '71 C10 build project, and just got me an '85 k20 burb, and am ready to have all the things I missed about my old burb, plus a few features it didn't have. I don't see this one going anywhere anytime soon, unless some offers me a ridiculous amount of money for it. I guess everything does have a price after all.
There are two tools needed, duct tape and WD40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD 40.

Well that may be for some however if I could be buried in my white 85 C20 that would be my last wishes.  I bought this from my cousin after his dad passed and he was settling his estate.  I would always spend a couple of weeks down there every summer growing up and fell in love with it when he first got it.  Since he special ordered it as a retirement vehicle there was little chance as he said it but he also said you never know.  He worked in the St. Louis GM plant where it was built and he took delivery of it right around his retirement.  Here is a picture when the paint was still in good shape and before the body started going.

My dad bought a new 74' C-20 in Jan of 74', he still drives it for a farm truck. My first truck was a 78' C-20, that I bought in March of 1980, with 9900 miles on it, I was still 15 at the time. Then I bought a new K 2500 GMC in Sept of 1986, and wish I had kept it. Best trucks ever built !

I've told this story before but in High School my buddy (RIP) had a 79 stepside

Everyone loved his truck and I had always wanted one too... So I got my 1980 C10 400 small block and started wasting all of my money ever since lol
