transmission squeal
« on: December 26, 2010, 09:42:14 pm »
I replaced my th350 because it had a cracked case with one from a parts truck I had.  I didn't know anything about the replacement except that it had probably been rebuilt at some point, evidenced by wax pencil writing from a shop on the case, and then sat for a really long time several years.  There was still fluid in it when I dropped the pan and it looked pretty clean, so I gave it a try.  It shifts firm under normal driving, but when I punch it, it squeals when it shifts from 1-2 and 2-3.  It sounds like belts sound or power steering pump squeal but it seems to be coming from the transmission.  It doesn't feel like it's slipping.  Any ideas what's causing it?  I've torn these apart before, but I never dared rebuilt one. I'm definitely thinking about it because of the cost.  Or maybe I could just re-case the other one?  Your help, as always, is appreciated.

2 or 4wd? Are you sure your belts aren't loose?

It's a 75 2wd 1/2 ton.  The belts seem tight enough.  I don't have a/c, so only two v-belts.  I could take off the power steering belt and see if it makes any difference.
