New steering box wheel is off
« on: January 08, 2011, 03:52:56 pm »
Ok this is driving me nuts cause I read the post the other day where someone  else did the same thing as me.  I put a new steering box and rag joint on today made marks on my pitman arm and old box and lined them up with the mark I made on the new box(counted the splines and made a mark on new box).  The lined up perfect when I put the pitman arm, put it all back together and now the wheel is off like a 1/4 turn or so when it drives straight.  All new steering parts a month ago and had it aligned before I started this project. 75 chev 3/4 ton 4x4.  What do I need to change?

I was thinking I need to move the rag joint over a spline or two, but it seemed to only go on one way. Or do I need to move it a spline or two on the pitman arm and where the box meet?

Are you sure the rag joint coupler was installed in the same position? Pitman arm can go on in 4 different positions on some as well. If all is OK adjust your drag link until the wheel is straight ahead.

Will this throw the alignment off or does the drag link only have to do with the steering wheel in relation to the wheels?  Thanks for the help.

Adjusting the drag link will change the relationship between the steering wheel /pitman arm location and the direction the truck is pointed, but it won't change your wheel alignment, so that will be ok.

Well I have that lifetime alignment on my truck from firestone so I just took it down to them and they reset if for free, now she drives straight agian.  Not sure if it was the new rag joint or the new steering box, but this is by far the best improvement I have done to this truck.  It drives better than a brand new truck, very happy with the results, thanks for the help everyone.
