Wiper & Washer Fluid questions
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:09:43 pm »
Does anyone know why my wipers won't return to start when I shut them off? Usually when its raining out they will go back to start or at other random times but most of the time they just stop right where they are when I hit the switch.
And whats up with the washer fluid pump motor, mine squirts if I manually hit the tab under the little coil by the pump but won't when I push the button, and its getting power, is it a bad actuator?  Thanks

As far as the pump motor goes, would it be easier to just replace it with a new electric pump or should I try to fix the almost working mechanical pump?

Is this the 77 in you sig?  Try turning it off when its on its way down.  I seem to remember the park piece associated with the motor.
May can search the forum.

yeah it's my 77, sorry should have said that. I have tried that, it doesn't really matter when I hit the switch, when they are up or almost down the wipers just stop where they want. For some reason when its raining they work fine, even if I shut them off when they are all the way up they will return to start. It has to be some park tab like you said, time to search the forum.
And that mechanical washer fluid pump looks like it would be more trouble than its worth to fix so I will probably just buy a new electric pump.

After searching the forum I think replacing the whole wiper motor/pump assembly would probably solve both my problems. Also found out my '77 doesn't follow '77 wiring schematics, it follows the '76 wiring schematics...

I wonder if the wiper transmission is slipping on the motor and that's why the blades won't return unless the windshield is wet. Just a wag.(wild a... guess) Could be that the motor is ok.

Capt. is right, on my 74 if I turn off wipers on the way up they stop there, but if I turn them off on the way down they will return to the starting position.

Like I said I have tried to shut them off when they are on their way down, they just stop right there, up down doesn't matter. The only time they work right is when its raining or other random times. Oh yeah when its raining I can shut them off when they are on their way up and they will return to start before shutting off, its gotta be some kind of aqua poltergeist or some crap....
