79 chevy driveshaft
« on: January 25, 2011, 06:52:17 pm »
I broke my rear drive off. I just found one on a 3/4 ton gmc. I was wondering if the drive out of that 3/4 ton would work in my 1/2 ton. It bolts on the same and everything. not sure if everything is the same the guy said if i take it off i bought it so i kinda wanted to know if it was the same. Thanks

I was thinking that the 3/4 ton u joint was larger than the 1/2 ton.  Not sure tho, but a tape measure would answer it quickly.

If it works, throw some new u joints in and get it balanced. Maybe new u joint straps as well.

The u-joints on the 3/4 ton are bigger but you can buy some crossover u-joints at NAPA. They have 1/2 ton on two ears and 3/4 ton two ears so you can mate it with your rear end. Measure the length of both driveshafts and compare to see if they will swap. there are several different ones out there.

Bob Cooter is right, I have an 81 k10 that has 3/4 ton axles on it and that is all I had to do, change u-joints to fit.
