Steering is way off
« on: February 22, 2011, 04:40:55 pm »
I never noticed this before, but it became apparent after I had added 6 in springs, a raised steering arm, drop down pitman arm, and replaced the rest of the steering components except the gear box. I can turn the wheels to the right until the stop bolt contacts. When I turn to the left, the lock bolt is about a inch away. I know for a fact everything went on the way it came off, nothing was touched or moved, and everything was proper length. the only thing I had to adjust obviously was the drag link. Should I take the pitman arm off and turn the steering wheel one revolution to the left and put it back on?

The dropped pitman arm or the length of the drag link is probably your issue. What is the length of your drag link from center to center? Do you still have the stock pitman arm?

16" center to center and I still have stock pitman arm, just not on it.

Do I need to shorten it until it is even?

I had a similar issue with my 77 deluxe, except I didn't lift it as much!  All I had to do was adjust the length of the drag link until my turn radius was even both directions!
