K30 DRW
« on: March 03, 2011, 01:07:52 am »
Hey there I am yet another newbie from Alberta. I came to this group in search of info. I own 3 73-87's 2 are crew cab dually's. I am currently building the 88 K30, I have built a 460CID (Chev of course) gone through the Sm465 and so on and so on. Where my problem lies is in figuring out lift size and what others have been able to run...as far as tires go. I am a HD mechanic and my shop gets a smoking deal on Nitto tires once a year so i just ordered 8 40X13.50X17's mud grapplers and 6 aluminum ultra 17's including 2 for spares and 2 steel 17's. Can anyone give me some guide lines as to what (in your opinion) size lift will be needed to tuck 40's. Body mods obviously will be necessary as will wheel spacers and such, I am more interested in finding out size, 8"-10"-12".

How wide are your wheels?  How do you wheel? hardcore off the beaten path or shuttling between gas stations?  How much are you prepared to spend?  If it were me,  I would go with a 3" body lift and cutout flares if your running it on the street, or 4" front springs, a 4" shackle flip for the rear and the Flares for serious trail use.

Welcome from California, my brother-in-law had 40" on an 82 back in the day, he had a 12" lift with no rubbing.

Hey thanks for the info, Now how about i give you all a bit more aswell. I have 17X7 wheels but my tires have a sudgested wheel width or 8.5-10" wheels. I have no doubt the tires will mount but the only reason for me sticking with 7 wide is due to dually wheels only being offered in minimal widths. Now on to my wheeling, I obviously will be going from station to station due to the 460/sm465/np205, 4:11's and 40's ha ha. Now if there were to be a river and or a few rock obsticles in the way........ Thats all me.  ;D Last but not least my budget on the lift i would like to stay under 3500 before drive line work. I would also like to divorce the 205 from the 465 for as cheap as possible.

bake74 your in laws 82.... was it a dually?

thanx a bunch guys

I'm pretty sure you're going to have issues running that wide of a tire on 7" wide rims. Some of the other guys may chime in, but to my knowledge I would say 10" rim minimum. As far as lift, if it's going to be mostly on road an 8" to 10" lift will work fine with 40's.

That's what my gut tells me too.

If it all works out as planned, that thing will be a beast, so put up some pics.

I work at a Kal-Tire doing all the heavy duty shoot but our store is both commercial and passanger tires as well. I am expecting problems on the mounting side of things and I also know this will be a all bars affair and no machine. But like we all know with enough effort anything can happen...lol I hope. Now is there anyone here that has gone quite so big on a dually or is everyone running dually's stuck on 37's? thanks again

It would be a V30 as in 1987 this body style changed the designation of C/K to R/V and in 1988 the new bosy style resumed the C/K series designation. You probably have a 461CID if it's a bored 454 which will help you out without having to say 460 Chevy and not resemble a Ford  :P Post pix!

I think trying to run two 13.5" wide tires side by side in the rear is going to stick way the heck out. Even if you could get them to fit on narrow rims. I've seen 38" military tires on a dually before, but they were only 11" wide on a 16" rim. They still looked mean though. ;)

Welcome from NH. Make sure those dual rear tires aren't so close they will rub. Good luck and post up some pics of the tire/wheel set up.

OK so its been a few days now with still little to no definitive answers on my question about lift size and how to accomplish the 40" feat. I knew this was a unordinary scenario on a dually, But someone has to have some guide lines for me to follow before i just order 16" of lift to be sure they tuck lol. I have a feeling it will be 10-14" required. If you could get back to me with how big and how you would accomplish it it would be great. Thanks for you help in advance.
