86 K10 broken alternator bolt..
« on: March 07, 2011, 04:18:23 pm »
I just got my 86 a few days ago, and the only thing wrong with the motor was the alternator didnt line up straight with the other belts of the motor, so it whined pretty loud until it warmed up. I had a dead battery the next morning after i brought it home. (battery was junk, not truck related). So i took the alternator off and a trimmed down the spacer about a 1/4 of an inch, to atleast help the alignment of the belt. so i go to put the main (pivot) bolt in the alternator and i did buy a new one, because the one i pulled out looked like it was an old bolt that was cut to fit the altenator. But i go to put it all back together and the bolt wouldnt go into the hole. I take the alternator off and take a look into the hole (on the head) and theres a chunk of bolt stuck in the head. What can i do to get the chunk of bolt out?  Would an easy-out work? Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Are you talking about the long bolt that goes into the cylinder head? Is this a V-groove pulley alternator? If so center punch the broken bolt and drill incrementally very carefully through the bolt until you can get an extractor to remove the broken bolt. If you cannot extract it, keep drilling until you can tap it out.

Get one of these alternator brackets. They're cheap and work good.

I have that billet alternator bracket kit and it works great. Just need to relocate your ground strap.

Don't drill past the end of the bolt into the head though. You would be best to get a set of left handed drill bits. That way they are trying to turn the broken piece out while drilling. Sometimes you get lucky and the piece spins out with the bit. Spray it ahead of time with PB Blaster too.

Also not to get you off track. It would cost more money but if you can’t get the bolt out then you could move the alt to the other side if your a/c isn’t there

well we drilled part of it out, and started to use the easy-out, and it broke.. :(
So my question is, is there an alternator mount that doesnt use the head as a mount?

Easy outs don't work very often, I hate them too.  You can still get this though.  Get some drills that are cobalt or carbide and if they're TiN or TiAlN coated that much better.  You can drill through the easy out and do as Vile suggested--drill right down the middle with the tap drill size for that bolt and then run a tap through it.  A high speed steel drill likely won't hold up long enough to get through the easy out.

If you don’t have ac you can a. swap your heads around or b. swap the alt to the other side with a new alt and some wire work. I think most time easy outs just do break if the bolt snapped off anyway. Had much better luck with the reverse drill bits

Thats is why I suggested left handed drill bit. I use easy outs often, I have broken them in the past but not for a long time. Like was said they can be drilled with a carbide bit.

ive got a titanium somethin bit. ill pick up a left handed bit tomorrow and see if itll drill through the easy out.
we just got about 4 inches of snow, and were supposed to get another 3. so im gonna have to wait.
i may just drill and tap it. but we'll see. how hard is it to move the alternator to the other side?
would i have to buy any different mounts? could i use the same belt? im kinda short on little green pieces of paper,
but i do have torches, and a welder i could break out. is there a bracket i could buy that would bolt up?
