If you think Honda and Toyota are king read this:
« on: March 14, 2011, 05:06:31 am »
So i just turned 300,000 on the cavalier a few weeks ago:

Original engine, trans and fuel pump.   This is proof that gm's can be as dependable if not more than imports.

i got it in 97 for $2700 cash.  It used to get around 32mpg, it now gets 28 and i think that's partially attributed to the E10 gas that's virtually unavoidable these days.

Now i have to admit that i'm probably going to put it on back up status for now because i don't have time or the ability to thoroughly go thru it and refurbish it.

So by the way, does anyone know where i can get a new or remanufactured 2.2 engine?

The problem with the wrecking yard is i'm essentially/maybe getting what i already have---a used up engine.  i want a clean slate b/c these engines are not nessesarily real easy to take in and out of the car.

i have to add that i have all my reciepts for service and averaged up it's about $300 per year to maintain this car.  There's too much notions in the air that the Japanese are superior when it comes to economical transportation.  i'm not convinced.

I like it!

Just hunt around for remanufactured engines...   as an example Jasper Engines is one place but I've never used them.   Either that or see if GM has a crate replacement engine for it.

Other than high mileage, what overall condition is the rest of the car? It sounds like it has been a good investment.

Maybe stick a 350 in it?

Yeah the engine for my focus is like $4k from ford, heck for 12k I can put a 302 or 351 in it and be done with it and have a vette killer.

Maybe I missed something but what's wrong with your engine?

300,000 miles.  You can check with wrecking yards if you have any around.  I know around here they have a warr. on engines you buy from them.

A little off topic and not sure if I mentioned this before on here but. Seeing your garage door opener in the pic reminds me of some criminals around here that would break into someone’s car steel the tom-tom or like device and also snag there garage door opener. They would then go directly to the victim’s house using the tom-tom home button and then use the door opener to open the garage and have access to the house while the victim was still talking to the cops about the car

I was wondering this too.
Maybe I missed something but what's wrong with your engine?

We are involved with a few cavaliers at the local race tracks around. Today I asked somebody that rebuilt a couple of cavalier engines last season what it would cost to rebuild a running engine(meaning no major damage just worn). He figured probably $800 including machine work. That was just a guess though while we were driving in a wrecker. Being just a guesstimate he may be way off but I know they don't have too much into them.
Last year in their shop we were all looking at one they tore down with 275K on it and remarking how little wear it had.

i'm actually nervous about Jasper even though i know they have it.   i couldn't find a goodwrench (what i prefer) part # yet.

There is some rust at the rocker panels and some surface rust on the rear floorboards, other than that, body ok.  The headliner cloth is gone, but most on the underlay is still there?  The interior is not a disaster, but shows wear.  Everything is intact and complete although the a/c doesnt work.  i can probably dig up some pictures.

3) Jareds:  Unfortunately the ecotec is not the same engine as the 2.2L even though the displacement is the same.  i will look into it as i'm sure it will bolt to the transaxle with no problems and will fit w/out any modifications.

i would love to and it would still get good mpg due to the light weight.  However, i'm not sure it would fit w/out major modification to the chassis.  The major point of interference is the rt. strut tower.  Will look into this further.

Well, there's nothing really "wrong" with it.  But after 300K, i don't want to push my luck.

Really, my plan was to eliminate the EFI and fuel pump and convert to carb---this way i got something simple and easy to fix.  But i figure if i'm going to do that i might as well get a new/reman engine since i was planning on taking the engine out anyways during the conversion.

So, can anyone come up with a part # for a new or remanufactured engine by GM or other decent engine rebuilders?
