electrical issue?
« on: March 17, 2011, 09:53:47 pm »
today after 15 minutes of driving in traffic i pulled over at a gas station. got a drink and got back in, turned the key... no power.

lifted the hood and looked around. battery terminals on tight. all grounds looked fine. its a brand new battery and alternator.

got back in and it started fine.

what would cause a loss of electrical power that only lasts 5 minutes?

X2 on starter wire. Did it make any noise at all?

No noise, no lights came on...it acted like the battery wasn't even under the hood.

Ignition switch going out, maybe? Maybe when you turned the key it didnt make the connection the first time. And when you turned it the second time it worked?

Could be. I mean not even the cd player came on. Ignition switch sounds more likely than starter...though I do need to replace the starter asap.

Might wanna check the positive battery cable running to the starter and make sure its not touching your headers. The heat will burn through the insulation and it'll ground out on the exhaust. Moving it around may have gotten it off the header, thus no more ground.

I killed an Optima that way, it may be worth a look.

The little red wire on the starter will kill everything if not hooked up or bad connection

tx replacing the starter doesn’t have to be done. iv seen new starters go bad with in a week. Make sure it’s your problem cause it might cause more problems down the road
