ok......i have a th350 trans. a couple days ago i went to chain to my friends truck.....pulled around and down a hill to get to him......now im pointed nose down a moderate hill. i put it in park and opened my door to talk to the hookers and my truck started rolling forward. trans was making a loud popping sound as it moved. i could feel the trans trying to catch it but forward motion took over. yes..it was in park. yes it will do it again if i park on a big enough incline. can anyone tell me what is broke? and if it can be fixed?

Its called a Parking Pawl. its inside the tranny but I'm not sure where.

It's just about the diameter of a pencil....
Your issue is the exact reason I park and ALWAYS use the E-Brake as well.

Start by checking your shift linkage and ensure it isn't sloppy. If everything is tight drop the pan and make sure the detent spring is in tact. If OK Check the parking pawl mechanism.

easy to fix? or bad news? who could sell me one local? cause the linkage is top notch. set it all perfect just before posting. i always use the e brake also. just wasnt getting out. trusted it. vile...this would be a great time for one of those magic zambone diagrams that just pop up when u get people straight. does such a doccument exist?

When you drop the pan you will notice the internal linkage and a bracket over the valve body. Make sure the bracket is tight. Block the drive wheel and apply the park brake. Manually move the linkage and observe to see why the pawl is not fully engaging the lugs.

will do vile. u say check the spring detent but all gears feel great when shifting. nice detents. but is it poss for it to be still injured? the detent feeling leads me toward this pawl. and lay it down for me.........can i get this pawl out without removing from truck?
