Yeah times are rough right now I agree mostly 90s trucks but I do see the new ones to, maybe people out of work or side money pay for a 08. I see a few with the 73-87 after a bit you start to reconize the other trucks.. These gas prices driving a 80 k10 are making me thinking about not doing it anymore till price drop.. I got a half ton but I put it to use.. In the summer there a lot more scrappers compared to the winter that's for sure..

i use my 86 for haulin scrap atleast 3 times a week. i gotta keep gas in the pig somehow. lol. before i started using my chevy, i had a 94 f150 and i had it so full of scrap, that i busted 3 of the 5 leaf springs in the rear. and i drove it crooked like that for about 2 months. then finally the steering/front end got so bad i couldnt go over 30 mph, so she got scrapped. best $413.86 i ever made.

and here it sits as of now.

Did you cut the cats out of it?. At today's prices the 2 cats in that truck are worth about $60 each.

when i snapped the springs in my ford, i had an engine from an International 966 tractor. (spun a bearing and shot chunks of piston 30 feet, through the block. lol) and a half-working silo blower and some other small stuff. lol. i forget how much it weighed.

i didnt cut the cats out of it. i forgot about those. it had a newer exhaust on it too. :(
it was a 1 owner truck too. my dad baught it brand new and still owned it when i was driving it. it had 211k miles and still ran strong.

Scrappers in my neck of the woods all get various gages of fire arms pointed at them :D The theft rate of old cars and stuff on farms has went through the roof. A farmer here that restores old tractors had 100.000 dollars with of antique tractors stolen off his property and they caught the guys hauling the stuff into the re cycler. I think all the scrappers around here are tweekers anyhow. Don't even get me started on copper theft  :o
Im not saying you guys are doing anything bad. its just around here the cops and residents watch scrappers like hawks due to the theft.

It's the same around here, lots of thieving going on. I run ads for "cars wanted" in the local paper so people are calling me to come get the cars. I get the title, registration, or proof of insurance that has the VIN # and the owners name on it before I haul the away vehicle.

if its not mine, i ask the owner if i can have it or how much they want for it, and if i can make a profit, i usually buy it. if its a vehicle, i always get a title, otherwise i dont get it. im working on buying a building thats worth atleast 5k in scrap. im paying the guy 500 bucks for it. 1/3rd of everything i make, is going to be used to fix up my 87.

and last time i checked, the place that pays the most around here, was at $245 a ton.

well if its something that has alot of parts, ill strip most of the useable parts and then take whats left to the scrap yard. if you want to buy a vehicle for scrap, dont pay more than $100 a ton for it. well up here anyways. it was $235 at the local scrap yard a few days ago.
so that leaves $135 for profit. usually the $35 would be for gas to go pic up the vehicle and taking it to the yard, if not a few bucks more.
then the $100 or so and that would be the final profit. which usually goes towards parts for my truck. lol

How much you guys paying for cars and what profit you make?

I pay $300 cash for every car I can get my hands on.
These are the well thought out calculations I go by (scrap is up this week to $230 a ton).
The average car is 3200lbs (neons are less/broncos are more) so I find this a good # to use. 3200LBS @ $230 per ton = $368.
Converters average $100 each (neons have 1, most broncos have 2) but about 10% of the cars I get have aftermarket converters. Those aren't worth the sawzall blade you cut them out with so I leave them in. $100 is a good average.
Batteries are $9 each.
25% of the cars I get have aluminum wheels on them which add $52 to the car. So that averages out to $13 a car on the rims.
On average that comes out to $490 a car minus the $300 purchase price. So it's a proffit of $190 on average. Not bad for a few hours work.
Toss in the occasional Chevy truck you will score and it's a good side job.
It may not get you that mansion up on the hill, but it in todays economy, every thing you do will help.
And as I mentioned before, there is free gas to be had from these vehicles.

If it is a car that I can part out I will pay alittle more for it. I bought a s-10 about a month ago for $300. I stripped the good parts off and sold them for $350, so when I sold the rest for scrap it was all profit.

The only ones I save to part out are the chevys. I've got many good parts trucks from this. I know a guy who is into broncos like we are into our trucks.  Any fords I trucks I get I try to drop of at his house. I let him strip them and I pick them back up in a week or two.  He does landscaping so he gives my number out to any of his customers wiith cars laying around the property.  He has gotten me a lot of cars this way. It's a win win situation.
