Stainless steel crank???

Has anyone ever heard of a stainless steel crank for a chevy small block. Some kid at the base recreation center started bragging to me about how he has built over 40 engines and he always uses stainless steel cranks and gets like 900 HP from street driven 383s with a 16 to 1 compression ratio. I know that its impossible to use pump gas with that much compression. And I just dont beleive this guy. I asked him were he was getting stainless steel cranks and he wouldnt tell me. I pretty much blew him off when he told me that a 450 HP 383 was a weak 383 and that strokers are meant to be high winding engines and arent low rpm torque engines. Anyone gonna call BS on this guy or am I wrong.

Forged crank never heard of a stainless steel. sounds like he's full of shoot. I have also never heard of someone running 16 to 1 compression on the street.I bet he wheelies the whole 1/4 mile to.

uh....yeah. couldnt have said it better. Sounds like a guy I use to work with that had a 74 Nova and swore it ran 11's.....my 10 second crewcab dually on propane beat him red light to redlight every time ( Im being sarcastic, i know the dually couldnt run a 30 in the quarter)

Reciprocating pushrod OHV engines have RPM limitations and the longer the stroke the less RPM you are apt to see within it's peak power range. It's not worth arguing with some people as they'll never "get it" and he probably couldn't put together a stock engine let alone hundreds of high hp power houses.

There is a guy that moved to my town a few years back. He is a plumber, at least thats what it says on the side of his van / box truck. But if you talk to him he is a bail bondsman, a bounty hunter, private eye, blah blah blah. Oh yeah and he has a 74 Ford Maverick running a 300 six, and a C6. Thing does flat 6 second quarters, and he can't keep transmissions in it. He breaks them in half almost everytime he drives it!!! 

 Side note! He is an idiot, and his wife is a sweetheart. She is from Poland moved here with her parents as a teen. I don't understand what she sees in this idiot!

He hasn't built an engine, he is self-concious about his manhood around you and he is completely wrong on all accounts!  You will most likely never see a stainless steel crank because stainless steel has horrible torsion properties.  Yes you can get high-end stainless fasteners from places like ARP.  These are specially manufactured and processed alloys to increase the material properties, but generally stainless steel does not perform well in torsion; exactly what a crankshaft must do!  He is probably thinking about Chrome Moly, which we know is not stainless.  Why would you ever have a stainless crank anyways?  Do you have a problem with rusting when the steel crank lives in a bath of oil?!  Ain't no one street driving a 16:1 383 with 900 HP, period!  A 900 HP blown or turbo'ed 383 yeah!  And again...he is completely wrong that strokers are high-revving!

Back when I was going to college at OSU I had this guy that wanted to race me in my Chevelle, street light to street light, in his Mercury Capri/Ford Mustang mutt.  It was raining out and the first light he took off all fast and I ignored him.  Next light he was revving-up and I just sat there all calm.  My roommate was with me and he was all excited.  Light changed and I blew him away!  Next light he was really hot and revving-up even more!  Again...blew him away!  Last light I started revving-up and he was about to lose his mind!  Light changed and I really romped on it for about half of the intersection and let off.  He went flying by and I turned right into the local Taco Bell!  We were sitting in the drive-thru lane and this guy turned around and came into the Taco Bell parking lot.  He rolled-up along side of us and I wasn't paying attention.  My Chevelle has tinted windows so you can't see in very well.  My roommate told me he was there and I rolled my eyes and said, "whatever...roll the window down!"  He was yelling and screaming saying that he could beat that piece of sh** anyday!  I just sai, "whatever, I just beat you like 3 times!"  He said that it wasn't fair cause it was raining and he couldn't get any traction.  I told him, what...do you think it wasn't raining in my lane?!  Told my buddy to just roll the window up!

A couple of weeks go by and I come walking home from class and the guy found where I lived and was waiting for me.  He told me he wanted to race again!  I ignored him.  For like 4 days he was there waiting for me!  My buddy had a new Plymouth Turbo Laser and was feeling a bit of the small man syndrome to so he told him that he would race him.  He said, "I don't want to race you!  I want to race your buddy!"  My buddy told him that if he couldn't beat him, that he couldn't beat me!  He said okay and they went out to SR34.  My buddy beat him several times and the guy always wanted another re-match.  Buddy told him I gotta go and left the guy!  Saw him several weeks later at the local speed shop and he didn't say a word to me!

I had a turbo Daytona which I though was pretty quick, until I was destroyed by a Caddy with the Northstar V8 in it. Now there's no shame in admitting what happened in the previous sentence until I elaborate on the fact that the Caddy was one of the pink Mary Kay cars with an elderly woman driving it.

     There are different grades of stainless steel.  316L, AL6XN, so on and so on.  ehjorten is correct, terrible in torsion applications.  We use stainless steel in my industries for heat and chloride levels in liquids (mostly waste water streams), so it makes no sense for a crank.

I know better to believe what he was saying. And Ive thought a stainless steel crank would crack for the same reasons, maybe thats why he had to build so many motors.He also said he can run 16 to 1 compression because he uses octane booster lol. Id never run that garbage. I hope you all get a kick out of this guy.
