86 chevy truck to 89 suburban front end swap
« on: May 06, 2011, 07:37:43 pm »
hello guys this is my first post on this site and i was wondering if anybody could help me out. i swapped the front end on my 86 with two headlights for an 89 suburban with four .i cut the harness on the 86 about half way down the fender and spliced the suburban harness in right there( i used an old chat from this site to get that far) the wires were the same except there were two dark blue and two light blue on the suburban (once again the same info said the two dark to the single dark, same with the light) after everything is wired color for color the lights almost work by saying that i mean all the running lights and turn signals work fine but the headlights are funny when i pull the lights on the inside headlight on the drivers side is bright and the other three are dim when i switch to low beam ( or high beam ?) the other headlight on the same side goes bright and the one that was bright goes dim the two on the passenger side dont change (although the inside light on that side almost looks like it changes ever so slightly,im waiting till it gets dark later to see for sure ) i hope this wasnt to long or confusing but any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome from California.  Did you trace the two dark and light blue wires, are they for the headlights ?
There is a wiring diagram in the tech section, it will cover your 86, not sure on the suburban, I am sure someone else will chime in when they have time to read this post.  More details you give the better everyone can help you.

hey guys, update on my front end swap.turns out (after a conversation with my brother and some advice on a couple specifics to check out) i had some faulty wires and wasnt getting a good ground so a quick trip to the salvage yard and 15 bucks later i put a new harness on spliced it in and it works great.thanks for replying, look forward to talking to you in the future.

Why did you cut the harness up. All you had to do was plug it into the bulkhead connector that passes though the fire wall into the engine bay behind the fuse box.

a little info for those who havent done this type of swap. the bulk head connector on an 89 is different than an 86 so therefore it is necessary to splice the wires in with the only difference in the wires ( as stated in my first post) being that there are two dark blue and two light blue on the 89 and a single of each color on the 86 in which case you simply wire the two to the one of each respective color and if your wiring harness is good then it should all work mine did. still putting the grill back in and doing some prep work and a little primer on the front fenders while i got the grill out and the bumper off so i dont have to pull it again to prime the body out ill try to post some pics when i get it together.till next time thanks again.
