Electric Fuel Pump?

76 Stepside w/ 350.  I was looking underneath the truck i just obtained to inspect fuel lines and noticed what looked like an electric pump. I am currently using the standard Engine driven pump I am not sure why this one is on the vehicle then again i am used to cars and motorcycles so if anyone can help me verify what this item is i would greatly appreciate it....and why its there. I think the one item is the transfer valve for switching tanks...but let me know what you determine.

interesting.......my dad was saying the same thing....the other tank (aux) looks like a large square box with a filler tube and not as rounded as the main tank.

One of the fuel lines is kinked in the top picture. The splitter isnt anything out of the ordinary. It could be a back up fuel pump, in line for the aux tank and piggy backed into the mechanical pump. My dads jeep has both, just as a fail safe. If the electric goes out, he has the manual, and vice versa.

Well i took the main tank down cleaned it out........installed a new sending unit( the old one was not working plus i figured while i had it out i may as well replace it) installed new fuel hoses and sending unit seal and lock ring....i had already installed a new mechanical fuel pump. It now runs pretty good.
  Oh yeah i removed that electric fuel pump ..it had failed. I may reinstalled a replacement down the road so i can utilize the aux tank with the "piggy back" method you mentioned. I think i may begin to plan taking out the aux tank and giving it the onces over like the main tank with new sending unit and fuel hoses.
