How wide can I go on my rear rims? And Transmission?
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:48:33 pm »
hey everybody. Okay so currently me and my dad are building up the old 85 c20 we had out back so I'm down to two questions. First how wide a tire/rim can I go in the back? (I want almost like a drag stance big fat tires on the back small skinny in front). Secondly What is the best standard transmission I can use for the truck? currently we have the standard four gear granny, but we just dropped four grand on building a 350 for it not sure the hp im looking at but I want a good affordable trans preferably five or six speed. Thanks ahead of time!

nothings wrong with the 465 strong and dependable but if your looking for a od trans go with a nv3500 or nv4500

Yeah I've been talking to the nv4500 people I just didnt know if there was one i was missing. And anyone on the rim width? I wanna go as wide in the rear as possible without being illegal or touching anything, without flares or work. How much hp will the stock trans take?

The SM465 will hold up to A LOT of abuse.

Yeah i'm keeping the 465. It's only got like 30000 original miles on it anyway. I'll just go for the limited slip rear diff. Not staying with the open one anyone got any good recommendations for that? Thanks alot guys btw on the trans haha saved me alot of cash haha

I've been finding some T56 6 speeds for about 1500 on Craigslist, but you'll have to swap your clutch over to hydraulic, which would need to happen with the NV4500 as well.

I'd run a 3.42 rear end with the sm465, you'll get decent mpgs and will be able to run on the freeway whilst keeping the rpms respectable.

Try www.ringandpinion.com to find what you're looking for in the diff.
