You can skip steps 23 -30, and all the one past removing the lock cylinder. This write up is for fixing a sloppy tile column.
Granted I have done a quite a few of these over the years, but I can do them in about half hour. Biggest thing is remembering where everything goes. Snap a some pics as you go, or use these as a guide you should be good.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

You could check with a locksmith to see if they can make a key or check with the local gm dealer to see if they can make a key from the vin. I had an issue with a copied key(my only key) working poorly and they were able to make a new key from the vin alone, however, it was a 10 year old car so who knows.

I deal with a GM dealer on a regular basis at work, When ever its something I'm looking for on one of my trucks they always say its to old for VIN number identify.

Try turning the ignition without the key.  It works on a lot of old gm's (in which case you still want to eventually replace it).

Funny you should mention this. My keys just fell out of the ignition while the truck was running yesterday. It kept running and I realized that I don't even need the key. One less thing to keep up with.

These trucks keep getting better with age!
