SWB bed sitting uneven
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:19:52 am »
So my '86 SWB that I bought turned out to be a rust bucket and a half. Bed was rotted so I bought a slightly better more sturdy one. Also I had the frame cut right behind the cab and had another SWB frame cut and professionally welded in place since the frame of mine was unsafe. Now the bed sits uneven. Out of funds and out of ideas I'm not sure where to go. The body line on the drivers side lines up but then the on the passenger side the body line on the bed is 3/4" to 1" higher then the cab. My idea is to notch out the two horizontal braces on the passenger side so the bed floor sits directly on the frame.

Check the mounting bushings under the cab. They wear out / dry rot and get smashed under the weight of the cab.  You can tell if it is , they will have big cracks running up and down the sides of the rubber or sometimes parts of the rubber is gone completely. When they wear out one side of the cab will lean down lower the the bed. The bed is sitting flat on the frame so it can't move up or down.
You must have gone to a professional welder and not a professional body shop. A body shop guy should have noticed that and pointed it out to you.

Your truck needs to be on it's wheels on level ground with tires properly inflated. If it still appears croocked measure the ride height. You probably have a fatigued leaf spring.

Who says the frame was actually welded properly? Anyone can be a "professional"

You're right. All you got to do is get paid.
