Bacon truck? Only in Texas, or kentucky

Never got around to posting this, but kinda funny.  I'm wire wheelin' my rear bumper, and start taking off some body filler to find a letter B.  Weird.  Keep grinding, and find an A.  Fast forward and the word Bacon on the left of my bumper.  My mind's thinking some kind of farm truck???  Really confused, I keep going.  Here's what I found on my truck from kentucky:



Apparently not from kentucky originally.  My daughter wanted me to leave just the bacon because its probably her favorite food!  I went ahead and cleaned it up and painted it.  Left the letters because it was different.  Don't have finished pics right now.  I looked the place up and its still in business.

My 64 Chevy C 20 had A.J. FOYT CHEVROLET    HOUSTON TEXAS across the rear bumper, stamped in similar to that. I never looked it up as that was back before computers, and internet were common.
It also had big stenciled 008 on the roof, and smaller of the same on both sides just below the A pillar. I was told it was a Texas phone company truck. Original color was a Catapilar yellowish.

Nothing to do with our truck but its about finding the history of something. When I was building houses, this one house we where repairing due to a fire while stripping the stairs down I found this piece of a tree trunk thought it was weird that fire wood would be under the stairs, so I tossed it in the trash. Then about 10 sec later it hit me why would someone put it under the stairs where no one could get to it. So I picked it back up and on the inside was the history of the house. When it was built, I want to say 1800s and who it was for. It was for a married couple with kids but the husband had died before the house could be finished so the builder finished it for the widow and her kids. It went on about who he was and they where but I cant remember that part. But it was almost like finding a treasure map but the treasure was history nothing really worth value, but a good campfire story

My truck has "Spivey Chev" on the left and "Benton, Ark" on the right. I know of several trucks from that area with similar bumpers. Looks to me like someone had a pretty cool business going with the dealers building step bumpers for them with their name stamped on it. I'd say mine came from the factory without a bumper because the license plate bracket and light are installed right below the tailgate and are still there.

Yeah, I looked them up as soon as I saw all of the letters.  They seem to still be kickin'.  When all I saw was the word bacon, I was confused.  Now that my truck says Frankston Texas on the back, I need some steer horns lol.

Oh yeah, I wasn't real clear.  I was thinking pig farm too when I first saw Bacon, but after seeing Bacon Chevrolet I kinda figured a dealer.  Funny name.  They'll get a little advertisement from my bumper--28 years later.  Probably won't do them much good in Kentucky though.

I live only a few miles from Frankston, TX and step bumpers like that are common around here. Last time I dropped by my mechanic's shop he had a beautiful squarebody up on the lift. It was bought at Bacon Chevrolet in Frankston and had a bumper just like this one.

Lots of dealers in East Texas used to do this. I think most of them just ordered trucks with no bumper and supplied the stamped step bumpers. It became less common after GM made step bumpers standard equipment. But there were still some dealers that put their name and location on the bumper (King Chevrolet, Tyler, TX was by far the most prolific around here). I think they etched the names on the factory bumper, but I'm not certain about that. I haven't seen any of that on '07 and newer trucks. There's just not enough room left on the bumper to get all the lettering on!

And yes, Bacon Chevrolet is still around. It's where Billy Bacon got his start in the auto business. Of course by now he owns three other GM dealerships in East Texas, all of which are located in much bigger towns with better volumes.
