Just picked up Chassis Saver...

I went looking for POR15, but my shop only had Chassis Saver. I have heard as many good things about CS, especially on these boards, so I picked it up, I am confident it will do the job. One question: with POR, they recommend using a zinc phosphate spray to prep the metal (I think the call it Metal Ready and Prep and Ready). Is this necessary for Chassis Saver? Should I go ahead and order some anyway? As I understand it, the spray etches the metal, allowing for better adhesion. I would think rusty metal would offer enough "bite" as it is. Is there any other reason to pick this stuff up?

As it stands, my plan is to wire brush/wheel the loose rust away, use a degreaser to clean away dirt/oil, then coat with Chassis Saver.

 A needle scaler is you best bet to remove all the scale rust. As far as etching the metal it has alway been my understanding that it only works on clean metal. As far as a light rust covering I don't think its that effective. I guess it can't hurt to use it though.
Couple things to keep in mind when using Chassis Saver.
USE RUBBER GLOVES!!! If you get any on your skin get it cleaned off with lacquer thinner, or brake clean right away. Once its dry you will be wearing it for a few weeks!
Clean the top of the can, and the lid to brand new looking before closing it back up. If not you will destroy the can re opening it. I also put a piece of 1 mil plastic over the can before putting the lid back on.
Shouldn't brush directly out of the can it comes in either. Pour out what you need into a plastic, or metal container.
Stirring it is better than shaking it too. I think it even says on the can do not shake.
If you plan to spray it two coats is almost a must, and you will need S8 reducer for it as well.
I also top coat all Chassis Saver with an acrylic enamel of some type. You want to do this sooner than later though. If you wait to long the paint does not stick to the Chassis Saver.

     You should read the instructions for chassis saver about rust, Por-15 needs rust left to convert it and seal it, If I remember right CS is suppose to remove the rust to have plain metal to adhere to.

I used POR 15 on my brand new gas tank. I didn't like the gloss so it just peeled right off like a sheet of wallpaper. I guess it doesn't adhere to clean metal as well. I used Chassis Saver on my frame and rear axle. I ended up spraying it and it came out good. I didn't top coat it either.

Yes even if you sand clean bare metal it wont stick to it. It doesn't stick to sanded paint either. It will just peel off like Vile said.
