There were only a couple colors that were clearcoated. For the most part the colors that should have been weren't (Gold, Lt. Blue & Red). Silver was & for some dumb reason White, but it was not the same White that was used in prior years. Lorne

Look in your glove box at the RPO codes. If it says bc/cc that's base coat clear coat

They had problems in 87 & 88 with clear coat peeling

My truck is the red and it is doing what a lot of vehicles do here in Arizona where the paint looks chalky.I have been told to wet sand it out yet also been told rubbing compound will do it.Tried the latter and it worked a little but did not budge the tough stuff.

Taz, If it's factory paint, it's not clearcoated. One easy way to tell is use a White cloth with a few dabs of wax or polishing compound, rub a spot on your truck then look at the cloth. If it's not clearcoated, the cloth will have a Red/Pink spot. If it is cleared, you'll just have a slightly dirty spot of compound. Lorne

My 87 V10 and my 88 V10 both had the peeling clear issue. Are you sure they weren't bc/cc? I don't have either truck anymore to check the spid label.

It is not peeling just looks sad.A guy told me today that the paint is dying.He works with paint daily and told me most paints will not last twenty five years,which my truck will be next year.I am still trying to send some pictures for all to see.

Ive been working at a paint shop/custom airbrushing for the past week or so, and ive helped freshen pain on a few vehicle. There was a Mustang Cobra that needed some custom.paint and a repair of a quarter panel, just a little dent on the wheel well. He body filled it and then we took scotchbrite pads and scuffed the paint and made it chalky  like your truck.is. Then he sprayed it with clear coat and buffed/polished it and the clear filled in the the scuffs, scratches and sealed the paint. Maybe something similar can be done?

Vile, I can take another look...What I saw in the paint chip book was about four colors: a White, Dk. Green, Lt. Gray & a Gold for '87...There might have been a couple more. One problem with the chip books is that all of the "commercial" colors are grouped together, so even if a color wasn't used on our trucks, but used on a S-10 or Van...it still shows up on the page. If we have a code (ie: 70 or a WA #) I can check for a particular one.
In '88 there were a bunch of clear coated colors. I'm pretty sure there were both non & clear coated Red in '88.

Taz, your truck is clear coated (or at least the bedside in your picture), as to if it's factory or not...I can't tell from that photo. If you look at the chalky area (the breaking down clear coat), in the center toward the back is a more Orange colored area, that is the base coat that has faded from no protection.
That paint is "dead", it needs sanded, sealed , more base coat applied & re-cleared. Lorne

Well ir depends what you consider better, you can polish a turd... you know the rest. If yours id that bad do a home paint job.
