Took my 86 in for paint
« on: November 17, 2011, 10:31:16 pm »
Took my 86 to the paint shop Monday afternoon, as of today they had removed the bed, both fenders and hood. I had stripped the truck down before dropping it off on Monday, the only thing left on it were the taillights and the windshield so I could drive it the 5 miles from my house, they're going to remove the windshield for me. They had welded up the holes on the bed sides from the old school tonneau cover snaps, they also welded up the holes in the bed from what I think was a rollbar at one time. Took a couple photos, I'll add more pics as the project moves forward. They're working on my truck in between other jobs so it might be Christmas before I get it back.

Are you keeping it the same color ?  If not are they shooting door jambs and all.

I'm going with the factory Apple Red on the whole truck doing away with the cream colored band down the center. Their going to remove the doors also and paint all the jambs, tailgate jambs, back of cab, front of bed, backside of front fenders, & underside of hood that is not covered by the insulation. I'm not having the inside of the bed painted as I plan to do a bed liner. Going with a base coat/clear coat paint so should look pretty good when done.

Yep, picked that up a couple months back from a guy that was parting out a 90 suburban. Got everything from him to do the swap but the grill and bezels were in pretty sad shape so I had to replace those. The core support just needed some fresh paint.

Went over to the paint shop after work today, other than a lot of sanding the truck hadn't changed much. So far I like the work they've done, seems to be a knowledgeable team that cares about what their doing. Didn't get any pictures today, they plan to get it in primer the middle of next week, I'll take some more photos then and post. I've been working on the pile of parts in the garage, cleaning, painting bolts, brackets etc. Got the weather stripping for the vent Windows and the door felt kit. So, should have plenty to keep me busy over the holiday weekend.

I am gonna ask the question that I prob shouldn't..... but don't feel like you have to answer.    Whats that type of paint job cost roughly?   Obviously it doesnt look like they will cut any corners and will be done right.

Nice truck either way!!

The materials alone on my truck (paint, clear coat, reducer, primer, etc,) cost about $1000. Good paint isn't cheap. I would guess about another $2k in labor. Im sure the pros will let us know but my guess is it cost about $3k for a decent paint job on one of our trucks.

Fitz is pretty close with material cost however the labor is a little more, once you start removing body panels and painting all the jambs the price jumps up fast. I'm starting with a rust free never wrecked truck so I wanted a top quality paint job that I would be happy with. Some might say it's crazy to spend several thousand $ to paint a 25 year old truck but this is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I hope that the body work and paint are the only thing I ever pay someone else to do, I would love to have done the job myself but I don't have the equipment needed and don't think my garage would make a very good paint booth. Most of all I've never done autobody paint before and didn't think this was the time to learn, maybe on another project? To sum this up it's going to be closer to $4K by the time all is done, but I should end up with paint that is better than when it was new.
