Throttle sticking
« on: December 28, 2011, 11:35:18 am »
I just put an Edelbrock performer carb on my 350 for an 82 C10. Idle is set for about 700rpm, and it does this just fine until i step on the gas. It seems once i bring it up to about 1100, it stays there and will not come back down unless I give the throttle a good hit. This happens every time I accelerate, so its starting to get annoying. probably isn't helping my mileage either lol

Sounds to me like your throttle cable is sticking or has a spot that it gets caught.  Recheck your cable from the pedal to the carb.  An assistant would be very helpful to push on the pedal while you check.

If you disconnect the throttle cable from the carb does it still hang at high idle?  With the cable disconnected, how hard is it to pull the throttle cable back to the idle position?  Is the choke cam adjusted properly?

I agree. Disconnect the throttle cable from the carb and slowly bring the rpm up.
Is it still sticking? If so, it's something on the carb.
If not, it has to be in the cable (or else you're pulling the carb arm at a weird angle and it's binding.
Are you running a throttle return spring? Can it stand to be a little stronger?

I just rebuild the carb on my old chevy truck and the throttle was doing the same thing you described. I sprayed a lubricant in both ends where the cable goes in and out of the housing and it made a huge difference.

Hope this helps!!

If it is the cable, take it off completly and lube it all by working it from both ends, this will help in the long run, and will solve all your problems.

It sounds like your high idle cam is sticking, spray some carb cleaner in and around this area, this should free it up.

Sounds like you've gotten some good replies. I agree, eliminate the throtlle cable as the culprit. That'll take you all of 30 seconds. If it is you may need to trim the sleeve on the reactive part of the cable. If it's choke related then that's pretty basic/straight forward as well.
