Cant find new 4x4 indicator switch
« on: January 02, 2012, 01:39:07 pm »
1983 K3500. I can't find a new 4x4 indicator switch anywhere. This is the switch that screws into the transfer case, has two wires going to it, and tells your 4x4 dash light if the 4x4 is engaged.
I found two part numbers from a local auto parts store for a BWD part. FWD37 and S746. Found S746 in their catalog with picture and it is the right part, but it is no longer available. Searched online and couldn't find that part.

Anybody know where to get a new switch?

Do you have a 205 or a 208?

Is this it?

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Result.aspx?Ntt=four+wheel+drive+switch&Ntk=Keyword&Nty=1&Dn=0&D=four+wheel+drive+switch&Dk=1&Dp=3&N=0

With 31 choices, I hope the right one is in there for him.

OOPS!  I've been spanked by the Bake-n-ator.  Tried to link to a specific switch... it grabbed em all.   :o   Maybe you could use their search engine to narrow the results to your particular truck.  Their P/N interchange didn't recognize the S746 number, but returned a specific P/N by application.  Maybe DTrain can provide a more useful answer.

Do you have a 205 or a 208?

Sorry fer da fiasco.  My bad!   :-[   ...but maybe some good can still come of it... yes?    :-\

bd:  I was not being critical, I was just pointing out that they had a lot of them, and the one he was looking for should be in there, I assumed that anyone could use a search feature and find the right one on the web site.

Thanks for the link. That website returned FWD37 as the part for my truck. I can't tell from the picture if it is the right one, and the closest NAPA store is 40+ miles away. The other ones pictured were not the same style for my truck. Guess I might order it online and hope it's the right one!

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Just checked my old switch again and that is definitely not the right one either. The search continues...
Also, I have the 205.

Maybe call up your store and ask them, tell them you checked on line and it does not look like yours and have them cross reference it in their computor.

Any idea who manufactured the S746 switch?

Another option if everything else fails:   get the original part number from a dealer and try to cross it to the aftermarket for an exact fit.  Or, if the powertrain is original, provide your complete VIN and a photo of the switch and I'll see if I can help you with the GM P/N.

It's a long shot, but sometimes it works....

Best of luck to finding your solution.

Called the Napa store. They show FWD37 as the part for my vehicle, but it is discontinued. They gave me a GM part number cross reference. I located it elsewhere under that GM number and it is not the right part.

I did locate the original GM part number for my switch. #15594176. A very thorough search online revealed it is also discontinued. It was supposedly available as recently as two years ago, but not any more.

Guess I'm either gonna have to figure out how to fix this one, modify a different one, or just live without my light. Bugs the crap out of me, because I want everything to work like original. I can find common replacement items for trucks back to the 50s, but not a cheap little switch for something out of the 80s  >:(

Give up your search. I bought the last one in existence. I found a carquest number and searched that. It is a tca-3. Found a place online , quad 4x4 tech inc. Its there part number, qu10515. $69.95. There number is 406-446-2427. The lady I spoke to said it was the last one, I even asked her to look around for any others.
I was very excited to find one. Yes, my light comes on in 4x4. It's so cool. Sorry.

mine has the plug in the truck but my transmission came out of a 1987 Chevrolet 3/4 ton along with the transfer case would it have the indicator plug?

I have a buddy down the road who might have a good switch in one of his parts trucks
