How tight is tight enough???
« on: February 11, 2012, 09:48:03 am »
I have been wondering this question for a while now and just read another thread on it and I thought I would ask.  When hangers or other items, such as in 4x4 conversions are done and stuff normally riveted from the factory are now bolted instead.  Using grade 8 bolts how tight is tight enough?  Is there a general rule per size of bolt in ft/lbs or just torque it to your blue in the face?  My stuff is like putting the front stabilizer brackets on the frame which is not as critical as bolting shackle mounts...

Great question Zeig... Let me dig up the post we had on this a while back. It included a chart of standard torque values based on tensile strength, pitch etc. Standby

I use the two grunt method allot!
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

I'm from the country.  Tighten it til she breaks, then you know how tight you should tighten the others.

That is why I asked.  I have broken my share of grade 8 bolts and the last thing I want to do is tighten it to much and have it fail under use...

I usually go a quarter turn before it breaks.
