question on cruise control

when troubleshooting the cruise control on my 87 suburban, can y'all tell me what i should be lookin for when testing as well as how to test all the components for the cruise to see why it doesn't work.

     Yours is electronic and not vacuum correct ?

i would imagine its a little bit of both, because i got vacuum lines going to the servo an to a switch on the brake pedal. not to mention to that, my truck has throttle body injection. so im assuming that its a combination of both.

I'll be watching this thread... When I parted out the 1987 C10, mainly for the 700R4 for my 1985 I pulled out the dealer installed cruise control which utilized the factory turn signal cruise control stalk.  I am wanting to install it in my 85 extended cab and will have questions I am sure...

thats cool, im trying to figure out why mine doesn't work an its starting to drive me crazy a little lol. although im willing to almost bet it something stupid to why its not working, just got to figure out what it is. anyway, on the truck u parted out, did it have two switches on the brake pedal, one switch for the brake lights with two plugs and a vacuum switch?

I think it had 2, I just don't remember.  I boxed everything up.  Most older cruise controls I have worked on had issues with vacuum leaks either from brittle plastic pieces or cracked hoses.

ok, what other problems did the older cruise systems have? just tryin to get an idea of what all i need to look for to try to figure mine out. you wouldnt know where a "cruise control module" be located as well as what it looks like?

I have never had a truck fancy enough nor part out one fancy enough that had factory cruise control.  I took the entire underdash wiring out of the 91 Suburban but I didn't pay attention to the cruise control components.

ok just wondered, cause im assuming the cruise is factory. of course my suburban is pretty much loaded lol

PM Vile if he doesn't chime in.  Maybe he has a wiring diagram/troubleshooting page on a cruise system.

oh ok, cause i need to see how to check all the components to make sure they are working properly. as well as the specs on checking the switches both electrical an vacuum

well on my way home from work, i found out that my cruise works. however, it only worked for about 5 or 10 minutes, then cut out an couldnt get it to work again. any thoughts on this? im thinking maybe a loose connection somewhere.

     Now that sounds reasonable, could be a loose electrical or mechanical (vacuum ) problem.  Might be hard to chase down, but you should just go through your whole system to make sure there are not 2 or more "loose" connections.

thats what im startin to wonder, just got to figure out where its at. but heres another thing to, ive noticed that to get the cruise to engage, i have to tinker with the switch to get it to engage. another thing, when i hit the button to increase my speed, it shut off. then to get it to re-engage, it seems like i had to shut it off an keep pressing the button a couple times to get it come back on again. but i'll keep updating my findings on what i finding out with my cruise, to see if y'all can help me out to try to figure out what could be the problem

     I would start with the switch itself, sounds like there is a short for sure in the switch.
