Motor's been sitting, now seized
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:53:48 pm »
1984 Chevy c-10 LWB 305 with th350 Auto trans

Does putting the tranny in low 1 or 2 force the motor to turn if I rock the truck back and forth as though it were a standard left in gear?

I'm a little worried about trying to put too much pressure on the bolt that holds the crank pulley, but I need to free the motor up. I understand a little (or a lot) of PB Blaster is in order.

Try using a Ladyslipper or prybar at the fly wheel, that will give the most leverage. Rocking the auto in gear will be usless.

I was thinking of taking the belt of the pulley completely and using some kind of strap wrench with a bar or pipe on the end.

Sometimes a seized alternator etc can make the engine very hard to turn and it only takes a minute to loosen the belt.

Pull all the plugs and fill the cylinders with oil for a few days.  Leave the plugs out and belts off while you're trying to turn it.

Don't force it too move.

You need to use a lot of patience and not rush this. I had a similar issue recently and it took me 5 days to make any progress at all. Everybody knows that removing the engine and tearing it down is the best way to approach this but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

If it where mine and I was not tearing it down this is what I would do.
Like mentioned before, make sure the engine is stuck and it is not just an accessory.
Instead of using PB Blaster use Marvel Mystery oil. Take all your plugs out and squirt some in each cylinder then take compressed air and give each cylinder a shot to get the Mystery Oil all over. This is where patience comes into play...Walk away and let it sit for a day. After it has sat try to move it in both directions without forcing it too much. If it moves at all stop and put more Mystery Oil in it and fog the cylinder with compressed air again and walk away. Even if it doesn't move, more oil and air then walk away. That should be enough oil in the cylinders. Try it everyday until it moves and stop without forcing it and give it a shot of air to get the oil everywhere. Once it moves a little repeat every morning and night until it rotates all the way around freely. Bring each piston to the top and blow out as much Mystery Oil as you can. With luck on your side you might have a usable motor still. Just work slow and let the oil soak.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Real trucks are built, not bought Build thread

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

We have used this method before but use WD-40. This was 20+ year ago on a 40 some model dump truck, it still runs to this day but uses a little oil. We have only put about 50 mile on it, but that truck had set for at least 20 year. Also reqiured a carb & tune up.

I did that with marvel mystery oil on a nissan and it worked.
