carb adapter?

hey guys just got a new edelbrock 600 carb #1406, in the install manual it says that i should use an adapter like this to put the carb on a q-jet intake



but the guy at the local parts store gave my dad, who bought this carb for me as a gift, this adapter to go with it, but when i read the install manual it said not to use this adapter?



so basically my question is, is this adapter that i have not going to work or is it just sort of a cash grab from edelbrock trying to get me to buy their adapter? i dont really see how it could make that much of a difference? feel free to enlighten me

Coming from someone who just bought one a week ago.... Take it back and get a holley. Its an ok carb but I wish I had a holley

to me this carb looks good it seems pretty basic to tune and im not really too concerned with getting every last drop of hp so im gunna give it a chance. i just need it to be a reliable runner

Either adapter should work. Maybe edelbrock has seen gains from their adapter? They called out the other adapter by part number??

You're wanting to adapt a squarebore carb (e.g., Edelbrock/Carter AFB or Holley) to a spreadbore manifold, correct?

My 83 olds had a Q-jet intake..i also bought a edelbrock carb BUT i did not use the first carb adapter,i ised the second one...it worked for me.
Before my street 1/4 mile time was 70mph and after carb and that second adapter...With a 2 inch carb spacer i got 78mph in the 1/4 (223,000 miles bone stock)

Trav, Not sure what the literature is referring to, but here's my thoughts. Either one will work, the engine will run fine...the side that is up in both pictures will go against the manifold.
 If you have a stock Q-jet intake then the top one will really be better since the air/fuel mixture will be going through the 4 holes in the carb down through the spacer & into the 4 holes in the intake. With the spacer in the second picture, the mixture will come out of the carb into the open spacer & "bang into" the large diamond shape area between the four holes in the intake trying to get pulled down into the intake. Most aftermarket intakes don't have the 4 holes (just a divider separating the 2 sides) so the bottom one could work fine there. Lorne

hey guys, yes i have a stock q-jet spread bore intake, and am trying to put on the edelbrock square bore carb. the instructions didnt call out the part number on that adapter but it showed a picture of it saying dont use this type of adapter. and what haulin said seems like the reason they would say not to use it.

Agree...but if you have to use that second one it wont break your motor,i put over 15,000 miles on my setup,I parked the car becouse i got into a head on crash i was going 25 and an ederly lady pulled out from a STOP and turned into my lane.....i could still drive it but the motor was guttless and the front end was messed up,drivin my chevy now =)

I have the first adapter you listed above...  The open one can screw up your low speed torque some, but it will work just fine.

The first adapter is better for stock type use, but either will work.\

The first adapter (4-hole) is for a dual plane intake, which you have.  the one with the huge single hole is for a single plane intake, which is for high end power, not low end torque.  but having the single plane adapter will screw up the dual plane workings.  Personally, I'd go swap the big open hole adapter for the 4-hole one.  they should cost about the same. 

I just have a hard time taking the parts guys advice, there ARE good ones who know their stuff, but for every one who knows his stuff there are 50 who dont but are just as convincing at salesmanship....

could not agree more with that. dont know how many times a parts guyhas steered me wrong. but im just gunna go back to lordco and swap the adapters. better safe then sorry. thanks for all the input fellas

the parts store will have the adapter you need and should be the same price, its just the second one is more common than the first one. most the time when people get aftermarket intakes they just go as open as they can for better air flow.

     I would go with what the manual says, (they are the ones who supposedly spent the money on R&D) not some guy at a counter that might not even know what he is reading (if he even looked it up) on a computer screen.  Just my opinion though.
