Removing Leafs from 77 C10 (8 Leaf rear)
« on: October 06, 2004, 07:50:00 am »
Hi everyone, first post. I have been planning on taking 2 out of 8 leafs out of the rear of my 77 c10 stepside.  It really only sees occasional trips to home depot, and light duty use.  I am hoping to wind up a little lower in the back and improve the ride quality a bit. I'm wondering which leafs would be the best to remove, i was thinking the 2nd and 4th leaf (counting from the bottom up) but im not sure if this would be the best way. hopefully someone has done this before and can help me out. Thanks in advance... John (in virginia)

Removing a couple of leafs won't really lower your truck that much.  Maybe 1/2 -3/4".  I would remove the bottom 2 above the flat helper spring.

Hey thanks alot.. I appreciate the advice on which springs to remove.. im planning on doing 2 1/2 drop spindles up front and the 3-4 shakle/hanger drop in back, i just am a little tired of the brick like ride... i am hoping to soften it up just a bit.. the most comfortable it ever rode was with 1600 lbs of shingle in the back, it only dropped the back 2 inches since i loaded pretty close to the cab and the ride was sweet.. just burned more gas lol. anyway, im hoping to soften the ride, and with the lowering i wtill want to keep a rake going... hopefully ill get all im looking for... thanks.. one more thing.. i just noticed that the VIN tag has camper loading information on it, does that mean my truck has the camper package and would that explain the tall rear height and harsh ride?

Yep, that is the way the trucks were designed.  They ride the best with a load in the back.  If you have 8 leaf and it definitely is a C10, you have the HD suspension setup.  Just to warn you ahead of time, but don't expect miracle changes in the ride when you pull the leafs.

You "could" move the rear spring hanger forward  (towards front of truck) to other mounting location and use the 52" springs.

All trucks had camper loading specs, for it to be a Camper Special it HAS to be a C20 or 3/4T truck.
