Cab removal with 2 post lift
« on: July 14, 2012, 08:20:15 pm »
Well ive bitten the bullet and good, bad or otherwise im pulling the cab to wire brush and paint the frame and replace fuel and brake lines. anyways whats the best way to lift the cab off the frame with a 2 post lift. I have to replace rockers and some floor plus the drivers side floor support and body mount so a little damage to those areas arent an issue. this is my first time so any tips are appreciated. thanks

Soak the can mount bolts with pb blaster or a similar product a couple days before, those can bolts are quite happy where they are, and will need some persuasion to get out.

The pinch welds will do just fine for a lift point, just get your arms as far apart as possible. Then fire safety, roll the frame out and drop the lift back down.

Have you built a cab dolly? It'd be helpful for keeping your cab square while replacing structural components.

How are your door bushings and pins? Does the door fit and work properly? If so you should drill some alignment holes in your hinges so that you can put the door back on to check the fitment of the new parts.
A cab dolly is a good idea too. Just make sure it is stable and won't rack on you while you are working on it or moving it around. When I did the metal work on my cab, I did a lot of it with the cab on the truck and then put it on a dolly to finish it off. And bolt the cab to the dolly to avoid a disaster too.

Good luck with it and keep us up to date on how it is going. Don't forget that I have some parts here waiting for you.

Thanks for the tips. Ive got it off and it seemed to go well. Hopefully I labeled everything well enough and  will get her running again. I am thinking about doing the frame cleaning/painting and putting the cab back on the chassis and going from there. I have not forgotten Thirsty, i appreciate it just need to find some time. We are having our 1st child here in 5 weeks give or take and as you can imagine between work and baby home prepping things are very hectic. I will keep you all posted as this build will hopefully go quickly as i need the truck for plowing this winter. Ill post some pics when i get them resized

Whelp I've done it now. I picked up an 83 cab that's in great shape. Solid floors, decent paint, and great rockers and corners. Only issue is its a 2wd cab but I think that tunnel change out is easier the cab corners and rockers. Plus it hides easier if I screw it up. I do have a 2 inch body lift in the garage that I may use. Not sure yet. I think this should save me time.

I think a 2" body lift will give you the clearance that you need. Easy enough to try if you have a lift. If you have a NP208 though using your old hump will give you a perfect transfer case shifter hole already done for you.
