67 c10 3 speed set up
« on: July 16, 2012, 05:26:07 pm »
Ok i am getting a straight 6 and 3 speed out of a 67 c10. Will the 3 speed work and all the linkages and driveshaft work in my 80?

No the wheel base is different (assuming both are longbeds) so the drive shaft/s won't work.  The 67 probably had a coil spring rear suspension with a 2 piece drive shaft.  The shifting linkages for the column 3 speeds also differ as the 80 style is very close to what the automatic is on the 1st./reverse side so it can be locked in reverse with the key out of the ignition.

Easiest way is going to be making it a floor shift 3 speed, unless you have a 3 on the tree now. You'll need to find a stick shift truck and get the pedals, firewall brace and linkages.

At this point in your project I wouldn't yet worry about it and get the rust repair done correctly. Just my .02

The transmission if it has provisions for a transmission mount is the only thing that will interchange from the older trucks.

So the only thing from the 67 that would be any good to me is the 3 speed it self?

No, the straight 6 will work if you don't need to pass any emission requirements.  The bell housing usually had the mounts and the transmission just hung out there just bolted on to the bell housing.

Sorry it was late, and I missed the motor part of your post. The motor will work as well as long as it has the casting in the block for the newer style motor mounts. As zieg said some of the older cars and trucks the motor ismounted by the bell housing, and two points near the harmonic balancer. The trans didn't have a mount. If this is how the 67 is mounted check and se if the block will accept the side motor mounts like your truck has, and see if the trans has the same mounting flange as yours.

OK i know this is off topic but i have a 78 3 speed column and i am going to get a 80 column and build a good column out of both of them. I have manuals that show diagrams, but I can not figure out if they are 3 speed columns are automatic because they do not say.  What is the difference between an automatic and a manual 3-speed column??

The manual column will have 2 levers where the linkages hook up on the outside near the firewall.

How about the internals?

Never had one a part but I would imagine they are quite different.
