Truck wont turn off . . .

so as of yesterday i turned on my 78 Chevy big 10 and stick like it nominally does so i turn it back towards me only to find out it wont move. needless to say i unhooked the battery (with it still running) and unhooked the alternator wire. now I'm stuck, i can not get the key cylinder out >.< i have taken off the steering wheel and and moved the blinker stuff. how do i get the cylinder out so i can put a new one in?

If you have the turn-signal assembly out of the way, your right where you need to be, On my 83, there is a torx-head screw that holds the cylinder in place, it is a black screw right into the cylinder from inside behind the turn-signal assembly.

On the older trucks there is a tab you have to depress to get it to come out, you need a thin flat screwdriver, there should be an opening on the top of the cylinder to slide it into.

The key must be in the cylinder to remove it, however I believe it needs to be in the lock position, since yours will not move, check the lever that the cylinder actuates, its a funny key-shaped silver rod on the opposite side, it may have slipped or broken.

If its got a 78 steering column in it here's how:

This pic is from my 78's column.

The metal inside the red box is supposed to be a hole but has flash over it, and you poke through the metal (make a hole)  (it's not hard)  and the tab you depress to release the cylinder is under there.
