75 c20 fuel tank selector switch
« on: October 07, 2012, 08:52:22 am »
Really screwed up this time. I switched the fuel tank to the Left hand from right hand tank to see if there was any fuel in it, of course there was no fuel in the left side. Switched it back to right hand now truck will not start. The switch isnt really a switch like on my 86. It is a lever that you push in for rh tank and pull out for lh tank. Did I just wreck the switch? Seems I do smell gas when i remove the air cleaner though but still not firing no matter how much i pump the gas pedal. Before id have to pump it atleast half a dozen times before she thinks about starting. Then after about 6 pumps nothing, just end up killing my battery. Even tried starting it with the accelerator pressed to the floor. 454 BB Engine.

Fuel guage is reading now that there is fuel in the LH tank. Also smell a weak gasoline odor. Still not even a fire.

Sounds like an issue at the switching valve itself, as opposed to the switch.  Crawl under and temporarily bypass the valve and go directly to the tank; that will tell you for certain if it's the valve.  I think your switch is fine.

Also, after you've done this, keep a small container of gasoline handy to pour little by little directly into the carburetor.  That will help to cut down on cranks, and save both your starter and battery as the system re-primes itself.

There is also a possibility that the fuse that servers the switching valve circuit was blown, but I doubt it.

I checked all fuses with test light. All are good. So I crawl under where? Is it right under the cab to manually switch the fuel tank?

It needed 3 or 4 antifreeze tester full of gasoline squirted into the carburetor and the 454 purrs like a kitten running on both tanks

Your last post is a little confusing. You didn't do anything more except add some gas to the carb-3 or 4 antifreeze testers full- and now the truck runs (purrs)'like a kitten?"

Sounds like the valve was stuck or dry. BTW can you post a pic of your fuel tank selector switch?

My fuel tank switch is the 73-74 bezel as in that link you posted. But the truck is an Oshawa built 1975 not a 73 or 74

I'm willing to bet it's the exact same switch as the trucks we owned through 1976 had.

Well I'll be dipped - it's your switch, Vile.  That's what I get for thinking!

That's a cool looking switch, never seen one.  Almost looks like a cable could be hooked and manually operated...

That's the original switch that was in my truck. I'm sure it's long since discontinued but if anyone ever finds the part # please share and Steve341 thanks for posting it!
